The Elephants Won!

And I must say, I love that I can rattle on about what I’m not gonna do … and then change my mind and do it!

I’m dog-tired, so this is gonna be a quickie before I head to my late afternoon massage, but I just had to report in – yep, I went to the elephants via motor bike. The guest house man suggested I put my hands on his shoulders as we took off – I thought the steel bar behind my butt could handle the death grip I had on them better than his poor shoulders! But little did that steel get from my hands compared to the rattan bucket seat I was in atop of Moco – 35-year old pretty girl she was and although quite hungry throughout our 2 hours together, she got me up and back to visit yet another temple in honor of Shiva – okay enough with Shiva already!

There was a couple (naturally), French (of course) who got off their elephant as I did – they asked me if I had ever been on an elephant before – I said, “I don’t think so.” What the hell kind of answer was that? I don’t think so? Like maybe I was, but I don’t remember – how could riding an elephant be something I would forget?! Silly me – at least I’m providing plenty of entertainment material for myself (and maybe even others, too)!

Made another stop to another temple deep in a forest – I was the only one there, which was lovely – took my time strolling through the forest – loved how safe I felt doing so. Had a very surreal sensation that was just momentary, but it felt like I got a sense of the wartime here as I was walking – it was very eery, but I just let it be there and then it was gone.

I sat last night at dinner and added another 25+ topics onto my List of Things to Write About – the impressions keep coming fast and furious and my fingers can’t keep up – I am so delighted to be writing again – to have that feeling of hours going by without even noticing – I had a writing teacher once who said that that’s when you know the creative process is fully engaged, when time stands still – well, I’m there, I’m there and it’s divine!

Just so you all know, I really love reading your comments – it’s like we’re having a conversation here and sharing it with you all is very dear for me!

I’ll probably leave Champasak tomorrow morning for Don Khong, an island south of here – it sounds like an utterly off-the-beaten-track kind of place, so no idea if internet will be available. Stay tuned, I’ll still be writing, I just may not be able to post soon.

Okay, gotta run – after a few hours atop Moco and 3+ on the motor bike, I’ve had just enough of sitting on my butt! Off for my coconut oil massage!

Much love to you all from the Land of Lao!

Funny, just today I got an email (picture attached) from a friend in Cambodia who was riding an elephant!! You two would like each other!

    Hi Christina,
I continue to love reading of your adventures. This AM when I opened my e-mail I had this one from you about your elephant ride and another one from my friend Wendy in cambodia who was also riding elephants. All is basically well here on Cape Cod. Jon and James and I all have had a stomach flu this week, birds of a feather stick together! We are all on the mend. Love,
    Jen

  3. James Mack says:

I’m so glad you rode the elephant! Perhaps you were on an elephant in a former life…you wouldn’t necessarily remember. Safe travels to your next adventure!

  4. Jim Geary says:

Well I finally finished reading all of your posts. And I am so excited to know that when you stay as a house guest next time you will follow, uphold and obey all of my rules! I can even count on you to cut that damn pie! And that when we visit you we won’t have a goddamn list of things to do that exhaust me before I even arrive. Hallelujah! ( Hi Flea, isn’t this change GREAT.) Actually it was very touching reading about how you are integrating your personal power and passion for stirring the pot while respecting local customs and people.

I must admit however that as I read your posts I was silently praying that you would quickly find something to stuff in your mouth besides delicious food. I know that those stories will cum in time. (Oh my God. Can I say that on your blog and still be respectful of your process, feelings and all that other shit.) I love you sweet lady and rejoice and celebrate you continuing to open your heart in such a tender way.

Now, now, Mr. Geary, while I am ‘open for business’ so to speak, I am much more discerning than in my earlier years, from when I’ve still got the lists you insisted I keep! You’ll be the first to know (well, maybe) if something develops in that department.

Now that you’re a famous author, you better be respectful and all that shit!! Much love to you, my dearest!! xoxo

Wow – what an amazing time you’re having. Your writing is so vivid that I almost feel like I’m there with you – your heart and your head are so joined in giving us the full experience. I can hardly wait until the next installment, says he vicariously! xox

  6. Wayne says:

Hooray, you rode the elephant. Probably not much different than the time you rode the camel only a wider seat and the trunk to be weary of. Those trunks can be trouble.
All is well back here in Hawaii. We had our first Chorus rehearsal Monday night. There were 26 of us attending and I was able to remain on my feet the entire time.
Aloha and your post are very enlightening.
    Wayne

  7. Donna Ingenito says:

Your whole camel/elephant thing reminded me of a picture of Sara and Aunt Alice atop of camels when they went to Morocco some years ago. While I pretty much agree with your sentiment of yesterday (i.e., we have no business being on top of an animal that high off the ground), I applaud your courage in conquering that fear! (Oh and Jim, although we haven’t met, I feel like I know you as I’ve heard about you for years, and as a frequent visitor to Christina in Hawaii, I can assure you that when you visit again she absolutely WILL have a goddamn list of things to do that will exhaust you before you even arrive. But that’s part of the fun, isn’t it?)

I had something to say but the comments rendered me speechless. Haha

Oh yeah. The “I don’t know” answer about elephant-riding. Perhaps a previous life? You never know… I think it was an honest answer.

    • Christina says:

Thanks, Amy – yes, these friends of mine can be a bit dodgy with their comments, yes?! What fun to have this ongoing, online conversation. Another life – yes, that’s it – makes me sound not so crazy!

    Hi Honey!
Delight in changing your mind it’s the best thing! I’m going to see if we can start elephant rides around Schollenberger (I’m back to walking there everyday…). Now here is a little poem for you ~
    Eletelephony
    by Laura E Richards
    February 27, 1850 ~ January 14, 1943
    Once there was an elephant,
Who tried to use the telephant—
No! no! I mean an elephone
Who tried to use the telephone—
(Dear me! I am not certain quite
That even now I’ve got it right.)
Howe’er it was, he got his trunk
    Entangled in the telephunk;
The more he tried to get it free,
    The louder buzzed the telephee—
(I fear I’d better drop the song
    Of elephop and telephong!)
You can count on me babe!! Love and xxxxxxxxxx’s!
